Research Statement

Details of Ph.D. work

There is continued inequality and vulnerability of women in all sectors-economic, social, political, education, health care, nutrition and legal. As women are oppressed in all spheres of life, they need to be empowered in all walks of life.

Women’s empowerment is a global issue and discussion on women’s rights is at the forefront of formal and informal campaigns world-wide. The concept of women’s empowerment appears to be the outcome of several important critiques and debates generated by women’s’ movements throughout the world,

The most conspicuous feature of the term empowerment is that it contains the word 'power'. To side step philosophical debate, it may be broadly defined as control over material assets, intellectual resources and ideology. The process of challenging existing power relations and of gaining greater control over the sources of power may be termed as empowerment.

Empowerment in its simplest form means the manifestation of redistribution of power that challenges patriarchal ideology and male dominance. It is both a process and the result of the process. Empowerment therefore is a process aimed at changing the nature and direction of systemic forces, which marginalised women and other disadvantaged sections in a given context. In short empowerment is a process of awareness and capacity building leading to greater participation to greater decision-making power and control, and transformation action.

Gender asymmetry is a universal phenomenon. This gender inequality is reflected in the famous formulation of the U.N. Decade for women: "While women account for half of the world’s population, perform two-thirds of its work, receive one-tenth of the world’s income and own less than one hundredth of the world’s property". Also, most of the world’s poor are women.

India has seen a growing recognition of the problems and issues concerning women in the last decade of the last century. The widespread efforts and concern with gender inequality culminated the year 2001 being declared as the WOMEN EMPOWERMENT YEAR. With the year gone by, the time has come to pause and reflect.

Government of India has taken various steps to empower the women out of which various developmental programmes is the out come of it Viz. Indira Awas Yojana, Mahila Samrudhi Yojana, Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWACRA), Maharastra Rural Credit Project (M.R.C.P.), NABARD sponsored SHG programme. Through these various programmes Self-help groups have emerged as a popular method of working with Women for their empowerment in the recent years.

Thus, collectives of individuals, usually small groups of persons, are formed into 'self-help groups' that provide mutual aid to each other around common problems and operate under such concepts as self-determination and joint responsibility. They work together to achieve specific behaviour attitudinal or cognitive goals. The group is the central component and everyone. Works with others for the group’s further development, and individual needs are met in the process.

It is against this backdrop that women’s empowerment through Self-Help Group can be examined and analysed.

The study intends to address the following set of four objectives :

  • To examine the effectiveness of SHGs in promoting thrift and savings among women of lower strata of the society;
  • To understand the dynamics of SHGs in the process of eliciting women’s participation;
  • To assess the implications of women’s participation in SHGs on their overall socio-economic status; and
  • To know the extent, the SHGs have facilitated to bring about conciseness and empowerment.

The present research concluded that, the group in turn has provided space to its members to discuss, share and articulate their (oppressive) experiences both within and outside the domestic boundary, and a process of SHG has brought change among the women to some extent, as they have started to organise themselves in a social group, which is known as SHGs, which was, absent prior to the initiation of SHGs in these selected villages. It shows the increased participation of women at community level in the direction of empowerment of women.

The findings of the study would provide with rich insights to the planners, administrators and NGOs who have been working with women for their empowerment.
