About The School

The School of Languages and Literature was established in 2000 with the aims of promoting language, literature and culture and also the study of its history. It also aims to provide the students of this region opportunities to accept and face challenges in personal and public life. An attempt is made to enhance their literary sensibilities and insights through interdisciplinary modes and methods inherent in the very concept of school. During the period of seven years, the School has remained the centre of various literary activities. Learned scholars and professors have delivered lectures in the School constantly. From the beginning, the School has developed relations with other leading institutions in the field. There has been a continuous exchange through the programs like the guest lectures, extension lectures, etc. Students of the School always have an access with the experts in various fields and trends in literature and criticism. To generate interest in Language and Literature at higher levels of learning the School has been : conducting post-graduate teaching effectively, organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, and conducting programs such as "Face to Face with a Writer" The School runs a two year four semester based program consisting of Part One and Part Two. In the academic year 2006-07, The School has started credit grade based performance and assessment (C.G.P.A) system to make the teaching effective and meaningful. The Master’s degree courses run in the School would be of 100 credits each. The total marks for four semesters are 2500.

Admissions

Admission to the course is based on the corresponding graduates examination. Candidates holding bachelors degree in Arts with optional English or Marathi and with minimum 40% marks in aggregate, from any recognized University are eligible for the admission to respective course.

Procedure Of Admission
  1. Admissions to the above courses will be given strictly on merit basis.
  2. Candidate must have studied the subject at the qualifying examination as one of the optional subjects
  3. A candidate shall be admitted to the first year course of the masters degree in the concerned, faculty, as the case may be, provided the candidate has passed the Bachelor’s Degree examination in the concerned faculty of this university or an examination of the university recognized as equivalent thereto.
  4. Aggregate marks obtained in the degree course (I, II & III year) will be considered for preparing the merit list for those courses where marks obtained in the optional subject is not compulsory.
  5. Registration forms for admission to Schools need to be submitted to the School.
Eligibility For Admission
  1. A candidate must have passed the Bachelors Degree Examination in the concerned subject of this university or an examination of other university recognized as equipment thereto. However, the candidate seeking admission to M.A. English / Marathi courses should have studied the same subject as principal or optional at Bachelor’s Degree level.
  2. A candidate who has passed Bachelors Degree Exam. in any faculty with English/Marathi as compulsory or second language shall be eligible for admission to the M.A. Course in English/Marathi.
  3. Preference will be given to the candidates fulfilling the condition – I mentioned above. i) If the seats remain vacant, candidates fulfilling condition number-II mentioned above will be considered for admission.

Library

Departmental library consists of more than 1500 books. It has rich collection of books and reference material. There is plan for a library, seminar rooms, separate cubicles for research fellows.

Students Activities

Students for the sake of their project purpose visit various villages and tribes to compile the samples of various dialects, folk literature – songs, words, idioms, proverbs as well as information about cultural and religious rituals. Students and teachers also participate in various social activities such as elocution competition, debating competition, and various programs organized on various occasions and try to enhance social interaction. Teachers contribute their knowledge and efforts to enhance social interaction by delivering speeches in schools colleges, and various institutions.Students are also encouraged to develop their creative abilities. Various programs are arranged with active participation of students or their initiative. Some of them are like seminars, poetry reading, meetings with authors or notable critiques. Wallpaper and meetings of discussion group are also regular.

Memorable Academic Events

The School has conducted a work-shop on Research Methodology, a Two-Day Conference on Interdisciplinary Studies, and a Two-Day Seminar on “The Theme of Protest in Literature”. Scholars like Dr. Nagnath Kottapalle, Dr. Ravindra Thakur, Dr. pralhad Lulekar, Dr. Satish Badve, Dr. Anand Patil, Dr. Harihar Kulkarni, Dr. P.C. Kar, (Baroda), Dr. C.G. Jahagirdar (Mumbai), Dr. Maya Pandit, Datta Bhagat, Bhaskar Chandanshiv, F. M. Shinde, Dr. Z.N. Patil Dr. Manohar Jadhav etc., delivered lectures in the School programs.

Minor Research Project
  1. Dr. Shailaja B. Wadikar has been sanctioned a Minor Research Project of UGC titled “From Structuralism to Deconstruction” in Jan. 2007.
  2. Mr. Prithviraj Taur is working on a Research Project about Modern India.
  3. All faculty members are engaged in active research in Marathi & English Literatures.
