About IMS
The Indian Mathematical Society (IMS) is the oldest scientific society in India.
It was founded by the Late Shri. V. Ramaswamy Aiyer with headquarters at
Pune in 1907. There were twenty founder members including Sr.Wrangler
R.P.Paranjape.He was then the Principal of Fergusson College, Pune. The
society was then known as „Analytic Club‟ which was soon changed to “Indian
Mathematical Club”. In 1910,new revised constitution was adopted and the club
acquired the name “Indian Mathematical Society” having registration number
S-550.
Professor B. Hanumantha Rao was the first president of the society from
1907-1912.
IMS is regularly hold its annual conferences, promoting young researcher to
read their research papers during the conference.
The conference is full of enriching programmes such as:
- Plenary lectures by eminent mathematicians
- Memorial award lectures:
- P.L.Bhatnagar Memorial Award Lecture
- V.Ramaswamy Aiyer Memorial Award Lecture
- Srinivasa Ramanujan Memorial Award Lecture
- Hansraj Gupta Memorial Award Lecture
- Ganesh Prasad Memorial Award Lecture
- Special Invited talks of half hour duration.
- Six symposium of two and half hour each (in parallel sessions) on various
topics.
- A paper presentation competition is held for the young researchers, six IMS
prizes are given in the conference.

Contribution of IMS in Mathematics
The IMS is the oldest scientific society in India founded in 1907, devoted to the
promotion of study and research in mathematics. The IMS organises its
conference annually in the well known institutes of India.
These annual conferences are full of enriching programmes, such as plenary and
memorial award lectures by eminent mathematicians, several invited lectures
and symposia on current research areas and a large number of research paper
presentations by researchers from all over the country including the paper
presentation competition. Along with this the IMS is publishing two periodicals,
both of which are quarterly namely,” The Mathematics Student” and “Journal of
Indian Mathematical Society” (JIMS).
Publications
The Society has been publishing two periodicals, both are quarterly.
A]”The Mathematics Student”(ISSN No.0025-5742) since 1933.
This periodical is basically for undergraduate students, teachers and beginners
in the Mathematical research.
B] “Journal of Indian Mathematical Society”(JIMS)(ISSN No.0019-5839)
Only the research papers of high quality are published in this journal.
It may be recalled that early classical work of Ramanujan was published in the
Journal of Indian Mathematical Society (JIMS).
In 1947, IMS published first book in English language on “Point Set Toplogy”,
written by Prof. Vaidyanathswami and printed at Madras University Press.
