Examination

Development of any country is based on the development of human beings and human beings are developed by and at the educational institutions. University is at the core of the sector of higher education and the crucial instruments of Socio economic changes are through a proper qualitative and value oriented training and education of the youth. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character is the goal of true education.

Education is an unending process. It is not that one reads a book, passes an examination, and finishes with education. The whole of life, from the moment one is born to the moment one dies, is a process of learning. Learning is a process of understanding the idea, concept, phenomenon, adapting to the change in the surrounding, which can not be measured but either felt or experienced.

The entire process of teaching thereby brings about the difference in one’s personality. Change in one’s behavior, attitude and understanding or the learning activity should involve not only the study of technology and science but also help in the development of skills, attitude, and understanding which are necessary for occupation and life in the fast changing world. The education system gets a full circle drawn with the examination system. A test is more informal in that it may be of a shorter duration and is given in class by the teacher where as examination is a more formal activity. Perhaps for the two or three hours’ duration, and is generally conducted by an external agency. The purpose of both is to elicit certain change in behavior among the learners which enable the teacher to make inferences based on the result derived. Evaluation is a testing of the measurement and assessment of the students. It is only when the result of the tests are used as a basis of making a decision that evaluation is involved. Evaluation can be to evaluate:

  1. Students performance
  2. Teacher activities
  3. The Programme or curriculum

Evaluation in education needs to be more systematic and deliberate, so that the results are not unfair or uninformative. Moreover there is an interrelationship between the objectives of teaching, the methods and materials employed in institution. The objectives of teaching should determine what materials and methods are to be employed and these in turn should lead to the evaluative techniques used, such that they examine the extent to which the objectives are fulfilled by the teaching learning process.

Examination department is headed by Controller of Examinations and is responsible for conducting examination, declaring results and awarding degrees as per the provisions of Maharashtra University Act 1994. Controller of Examinations works directly under the control of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. All the policy decision in connection with the examination matters are taken by the Board of Examinations. The university follows an annual as well as semester pattern of examination, while the campus school follows a CGPA semester system with autonomous status of teaching and examination.

The evaluation of answer sheets are done by external examiners at a central assessment programme (CAP). The answer sheets are masked before evaluation, so that examiners do not know identity of candidates. The assessed answer sheets are then moderated by another subject expert for discrepancy in assessment, if any. The moderated answer sheets are scrutinized for checking again whether all questions have been evaluated and whether the total of marks given is correct. The final mark sheet is then prepared by unmasking the answer sheets and entering the seat numbers of the students in the mark sheet.

In order to bring the transparency in the assessment university has taken the decision to provide the photocopy of answer sheets to the students. Before giving the photocopy in the hands of students the recounting of the marks is done on the answer sheets. After receiving the photocopy students can apply for the revaluation by paying the prescribed fees in the colleges, the college can submit such application along with the fees to the university. University tries to give the result to the students as early as possible. This system requires actually much time to receive the result. Therefore university has taken the alternative decision to give the results to the students through direct revaluation without giving the photocopy.

The results and mark sheets are completely computerized. The marks given by the examiners/moderators are transferred in the mark sheets by digital scanners avoiding the manual data entry process, to eliminate human errors. University has adopted ATKT for 25% of the total heads of passing. The Board of Examination is very sticks up with the recommendations regarding Malpractice cases found during the examination given by the 32(6)(a) committee:

The examination process of this university has been appreciated by the Hon’ble Chancellor and the Government of Maharashtra and they are being implemented as common standard of examination code for all the universities of Maharashtra.
